Help? [03 Dec 2009|06:42pm]
Ju, sorry, I'm a little late, but I hope this re-post helps..

Dear F-LIST:

Ju [info]shuju_the_red is my RL friend who needs our help. She needs to come up with $2,500 by 11am Friday Phil. time (Thursday 10pm EST) or she and her family lose their house. That's in a little more than 12 hours, and we need more help. THE STORY AND A PAYPAL BUTTON are over at [info]alankria's journal.

I don't know why you should believe me and help a stranger, other than my assurance that your help will go a long way in helping a family keep the house they've lived in all their lives, and that your kindness and generosity will circle the world (considering more than half of you do live at the other end of the world) and go back to you, a thousand times over.

Oh and if you are in the US, there's something else for you: Donate $10 (or more! why not?) and you will get a free book.

To those who live anywhere else: I don't know what you might need from me, but if there is something, material or otherwise ... Ju has done so much for me and needless to say I will do anything that's within my means.

Please help Ju. I beg you to please click HERE and help (or at least spread the word and repost, please?).

Thank you, thank you,

Joseph

Gibo, etc [25 Nov 2009|08:23pm]
I don't like to take politics seriously, largely because it MUST be taken seriously, and I'm from the school of Oscar Wilde and his principles: "we should treat all the trivial things of life seriously, and all the serious things of life with sincere and studied triviality."

Anyway.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's really just a Teodoro-Villar-Aquino race, isn't it? If the elections were tomorrow or next week, Gibo's my president. Not because I met him today, but ever since seeing that horrendous two-minute (?) Noynoy ad, I was like, Ok, Gibo's DA MAN. Also, when asked about the first thing he'd do as president, he said he'd push for charter change. Yes please! I just don't buy that "it's not the system, it's the people" argument anymore. Meanwhile, you can't even dream of seeing Noynoy and charter change in a single sentence except here.

I was originally for Villar. But I got turned off by those Ondoy packed lunches bearing his name. And his ads, major turn off. I don't approve that he has to be the one vibrant orange spot in a pool of dull people. Sorry, that's just too messianic for my taste. The final straw came when I've read he's anti-RH Bill.

Noynoy, well, is winning. Unless he fucks up REAL BAD. I remember following the US elections and reading commentaries saying that a major slip is the only thing that can prevent Barack from winning. I can feel that now.

BUT THAT TV AD. YUCK. Ok, so you have all these stars supporting you (now what?), and I know it's not yet campaign season, but for the love of all that is true and good, at least show us signs that you actually intend to do SHIT for this country.

So if the elections were tomorrow, I'd vote for Gibo. But it's not. And I have one major regret: I didn't get to ask him about the RH Bill. And I've heard he's Anti-RH Bill. While Noynoy is pro. I need confirmation on these. And I will closely watch how you two deal with the church and its retarded whims.

I will not talk about the recent massacres. One argument I've heard for Gibo is that he knows how to handle this mess, but as my friend says, the massacres don't speak well for the peace and order here. It's a shame I haven't really been able to follow this, so I can't say how well (or not) Gibo has spun the issue, because one thing I believe in is that the government has a hand in all these. I will do my homework later.

That said, I want to hear Noynoy's plan for Mindanao. DUDE, YOU BETTER HAVE ONE. Just sayin'

AS FOR VP.

Edu was charming and all (the reporter beside me said Edu looked like Superman, heh). But...Edu, Vice President? Hehe.

Loren's an opportunistic bitch. I like your environmental chuchubells, girl, but I'm not convinced that you're not using such high position to wear sluttier gowns. My eyes bled when I saw THAT gown.

And Mar, seriously, what's up with that Con-Aswang stunt at the Senate? Did you just really have to wear that garlic necklace? Really? Really really?? And I take it against your judgment and you as a person that you chose That Woman to be your wife. Hahaha. Excuse.

That said, if the elections were tomorrow, I'm abstaining for VP.

...

I have clearer pictures, but they're not pretty. The governor took this. How often can you say that?

rubbish [14 Jul 2009|01:14pm]
Where are my friends from Economics? I took only three units of Economics in college (nevermind that it's with Winnie Monsod, who spanked me on the butt) but my head hurts a little from what I just saw on TV. It was Philippine Fashion Week TV, and the first thing I saw was the Secretary of the Department of Agriculture raving about the use of local fibers and

GUYS--

HOW WE HAVE TO INVEST ON THE PHILIPPINE FASHION INDUSTRY TO HELP 80,000+++ FARMERS IMPROVE THEIR LIVELIHOOD.

REALLY?? SERIOUSLY?!!! It would have been o-kaaaay if it were an ordinary audience talking because sure, it will help, somehow. But it was the government; he actually spoke on stage with PBB* English. It was not a spur-of-the-moment "this is the greatest thing ever" speech; IT IS ACTUALLY HIS PROJECT OMG YOU GUYS. The guy will actually use taxpayers' money and divert precious attention on something that will be so futile. REALLY. Nevermind that I don't believe many of our local designers will make it on the global stage anytime soon. Honestly, who designs with those farmers in mind? You use pinya and abaca because they're pretty materials. As soon as you find something more interesting/innovative/beautiful, you use that. YOU JUST GO FUCKING DO YOUR BUSINESS AND DESIGN, FOR FUCK'S SAKE. Help those designers improve their craft; that's how they will help this country. Please don't use those poor farmers as a front for myopic, ridiculous projects. They need focused, urgent attention on their own.

And I thought *I* have fucked-up priorities. Reminds me of a lecture with Ma'am Ick, how English majors and ~artists~ in this country cater to the need to be **relevant** to demanding times blarblekshdjkgejsk. But that's for another time.

SERIOUSLY. I may have impaired judgment here. I need a more informed insight. I need to be proven wrong.

Abby and I were at the food court in Megamall yesterday to get siomai.

Me: You know, eating in a food court is like jacking off. It's quick, cheap, easy. As opposed to having, well, ~the real thing~ in a restaurant.

Abby: Yeah, and you don't get as much pleasure.

:D :D

Before that, we collected our corrected papers and I did get a perfect grade for that paper on Billy Budd and Greenblatt's self-fashioning. Abby was against that paper when I was writing it because it was a stretch. I thought so, too, but I pulled it off. I can receive my degree peacefully now.

Graduate [01 Jun 2009|05:06pm]
[ mood | feverish ]

All grades are in. Unless I unconsciously did something that will prevent me from being cleared, this little boy is now a college graduate.

(The pic on the right is the result of this.)

This is such a big deal and reminds me of the first line of Obama's victory speech in Iowa, "They said this day would never come". Except change "they" to "I". When I was in grade school I would get so sick of school and look up at my parents and genuinely wonder how they got to survive so many years of schooling. Then here I am, now an out-of-school youth.

I expected an uno in my Rizal course, and I got it. The biggest surprise was getting a 1.25 (like an A-) in my American Romantics class with the professor notorious for giving me not-so-stellar grades in the past two subjects I had with her. I learned a lot, but I practically trudged through my exam and papers in that class. Imagine using Greenblatt's Renaissance Self-Fashioning to discuss Melville's Billy Budd. I honestly thought it was a huge leap, but I suppose the professor found it brilliant. I also submitted a paper three days late because...well, I kind of broke down the night I was about to complete it. Bio, however, is bad news.

There are many other things I want to talk about...my coughing roommate, the limbo I'm in, my new residence. But I'm sick, no thanks to my roommate, really.

ttfn, guys.

Ever since finishing this paper I crammed with the most artificial academese I've ever pulled out of my ass, I've spent HOURS looking for the original volume where this particular Calvin and Hobbes quote first appeared. I've tried every possible Google keyword I can think of and I can't believe I can't find it. I can't believe nobody pays attention to these little things. I can't even find the original strip ugh
calvin and hobbes quote cite
calvin and hobbes volume search
calvin and hobbes quote first publication

...............

I'm sleepy and so very tempted to cite a book of quotes, but who fucking does that UGH UGH UGH
I love scholarship. Really, I do.

Haraway, clones, cyborgs [06 Feb 2009|05:59pm]
Hey guys, does anybody have an accessible copy (.pdf or whatever format) or links of that part in Donna Haraway's 1997 book, Modest_Witness@Second_Millennium.FemaleMan©Meets_OncoMouse, where she talks about clones/cloning? I have reason to believe I'll need it for my paper and I can't find a copy. Also, if you have any articles/journals/dissertations or recommendations about other stuff linking clones and cyborgs (and literature), please let me know. Thanks a lot!

The priest's closing prayer at the event I attended tonight:

"Let's always pray to the Virgin Mary as we now enter the year of the Ox."

HAHAHAHAHHAHA. Okay, maybe it's just me. My cousins who were beside me didn't get it. =/ For some reason New Year's Eve always feels so stressful.

I fucking hate it how Facebook annoys you of the smallest things your friends do with their Facebook accounts, but it never tells you when someone de-friends you.

What's the rationale behind this? Facebook is only supposed to make you feel good about yourself? I don't get it.
